Overview
Construction Industry worldwide uses BIM models that are relational and parametric. There are a few dimensions in BIM Models that are followed by construction professionals. Amongst it, 5D BIM Services Model includes specification of data and other related properties that connect to cost of an entire construction project. 5D BIM-Benefits and Challenges 5D BIM offers many benefits such as visualization, collaboration, quality, data and efficiency of take-offs during budget estimate stage, risk identification and more. Obstacles for BIM Adoption have been a pre-requisite for the AEC Industry to provide collaborative and interoperability 5D, BIM Models that aids in cost estimation of the construction project. Automated Standard for coding BIM software The automated standard for coding BIM software to a standard method of measurements is deprived. Designers, Architectural, Structural and MEP Engineers cannot code due to it and if they code it may not be précised. BIM estimation tools are capable of generating large quantities of construction items to produce cost estimates though extracted quantities can portray a lack of understanding of construction procedures and methods that reduces the efficiency in cost estimates. Automated quality for coding BIM software hence is a challenge. Incompatible to cost planning element formats Designers and Drafters are two sets of a construction professional that have used a traditional 2D estimating methodology and 3D software for cost estimation which was proven methods in reducing errors and time is taken. BIM Model has design errors and often misses out on information withholding BIM’s uses for producing 5D cost services. To enhance cost planning services, it becomes necessary for the 3D BIM Models to be accurate and provide complete data. Protocols for coding BIM objects Adoption of 5D BIM is resisted due to lack of protocols for coding BIM objects that are required to standardize coding of objects within BIM Models. New standards must be implemented by Quantity surveying companies to enhance accuracy and précised BIM Model coding for the objects. Software compatibility Due to lack of software compatibility and interoperability is becoming the biggest hurdle in the adoption of 5D BIM for Quantity Surveying. It can apply to physical use and knowledge of the working on numerous software. There are competitions among the software vendor that enable vendors to provide software in proprietary type formats that moderate the exchange of data amongst other organizations. Hence to resolve this hurdle, the only solution is to implement IFCs for smooth data exchange. 5D setup costs Cost estimation factor in 5D BIM describes the costing of the software, training, and hardware. Everyone in the construction industry wants to implement 5D BIM, but it’s the software and hardware cost that is serving as the obstacle. Big companies are able to manage the cost while small and medium companies struggle with it. Training can be a time-consuming part for the quantity surveyors in the adoption of 5D BIM. Conclusion 5D BIM is a part of the BIM Process that aids in increasing efficiency, visualization of construction geometry and risk identification. But 5D BIM adoption among the quantity surveyors is a major concern as the cost of implementing and training the software and hardware is huge to them. There is huge risk exposure to adopt 5D BIM faced by quantity surveyors, so they are not willing in using 5D BIM.
